Please Help

by Marinka on November 4, 2012

You don’t want to read the post that I’ve been writing in my head. You don’t. Because it is about how even though we got our power back yesterday, I still think I smell urine everywhere. Did I type smell? I meant stench. I really missed flushing the toilet. A lot. Or the suggestions Mama had for me in that regard. Things that I am too traumatized to type out, but included phrases like “defecate” and “plastic bag” and “throw in trash” and “like a Girl Scout.” I don’t know what kind of Girl Scouts they had in Russia, but I’m never eating another Thin Mint again.

But I’m not going to write about that today, because I have an urgent plea. And you know that whenever I get serious, it’s going to cost you.

Because whereas I have heat and power and food, some NYC residents are suffering tremendously. The Far Rockaways have been devastated by Hurricane Sandy and the residents have almost nothing. They need food. They need blankets. Their babies need diapers and formula. I have a special spot for Far Rockaway because my grandfather, Papa’s father, lived there when he moved to the United States in the 1990s until his death.

I know that many of us are frustrated and are looking for a way to help. The incredible J. Courtney Sullivan spent the day in the Rockaways on Saturday and saw the devastation, and the cold and the hunger. And helped people. And then she set up a site about how the rest of us can help, regardless of whether we are local or not. If you are not local, you can send the supplies, donate money via a website or order the supplies to be sent on Amazon. Please, please check it out and do what you can to help.

If you are able to make a donation, and are a blogger and/or business owner, please email me at MarinkaNYC@gmail.com and I’ll be happy to put your link up in my sidebar as a small token of my appreciation.

Thank you for reading.

xo,

Marinka

Okay I’m going to mail diapers today, and I think my husband’s pediatrics office has formula (the drug reps love leaving that stuff) so I will collect it on Monday to mail. I’m hoping to post something on my blog today to link to your post and some others with information on how to help. Thanks for this. Glad you have power even if it smells like urine.

Amazon isn’t liking the address they have on their website, and is suggesting one down the street. I emailed them, but perhaps you have a more direct line of finding out for sure what address to send it to?

Thinking of you and all of the serious things happening on the east coast. I donated to the red cross, hoping that will help more than paying to ship stuff across the whole country, but maybe I’m wrong, so I’ll check out the links.

Marinka, my husband grew up in Belle Harbor, Rockaway and he is devastated at the destruction left behind from Sandy. I have donated to the Red Cross. Our local grocery chain made it very easy to donate by adding the donation to your grocery bill. I will continue to give a little each time I go to the store for as long as I can.

THIS is such a generous offer, Marinka.

The sidebar, people: GO FOR THE SIDEBAR and help so many right now.

We spent two hours this afternoon sorting out a diaper and peanut butter drive at our church. At least a hundred of us, and there was so much: our community came through.

I’m giving a whole bunch of clothes our boys have outgrown to a drive that is being organized here in Maryland. Our hearts are with all the storm victims.

It’s terrible the devastation that has occurred there (and many other places), hopefully there will be relief soon!

i knew those girl scouts were a sketchy bunch!

thanks for this opportunity. we wanted to do something and didn’t really know how/where. This gave me some direction. just donated via your link. you are very generous, but there is no need for any “compensation.” just letting you know i did it so you see your efforts motivated/empowered people! we were so grateful to escape without the expected damage her in VA. i really wanted to do something. And, I’m glad you got to flush your toilet finally! 🙂
